Chocolate was a currency in Aztec civilisation

The Aztecs valued cacao beans so highly they were used as currency. A turkey cost 100 beans; a slave cost 100 cacao beans too. Cacao was also used to pay taxes and tribute to the empire. It was reserved for warriors and nobles as a drink.
