Light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to reach Earth but 100,000 years to leave the Sun

The photons that warm your skin today were produced by nuclear fusion in the Sun's core roughly 100,000 years ago — not 8 minutes ago. Because the solar core is extraordinarily dense, photons bounce randomly between particles for millennia before working their way to the surface, a process called a 'random walk'. Once they escape from the photosphere, they cross the 150 million kilometres to Earth in just 8 minutes and 20 seconds. The light warming you today originated before modern humans existed.
