Coffee Was Discovered by a Goat Herder, According to Legend
The popular origin story of coffee involves an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi who noticed his goats became unusually energetic after eating berries from a certain tree — and didn't sleep that night. He brought the berries to a monastery, where monks made a drink that kept them awake during evening prayers. While possibly apocryphal, coffee cultivation is indeed traced to Ethiopia's Kaffa region around the 9th century.
