Saturn's rings are younger than the dinosaurs

Saturn's iconic rings appear ancient, but data from NASA's Cassini mission, which ended in 2017, suggest they formed between 10 and 100 million years ago — meaning they didn't exist when dinosaurs walked Earth. The rings are also disappearing: rain from the rings falls into Saturn's atmosphere at a rate estimated at 10,000 kg per second. At this rate, the rings would be gone within 100 million years. What we think of as one of the solar system's defining features is a transient, relatively recent phenomenon that future inhabitants of Earth — in geological time — will not be able to see.
