Banksy's artwork can destroy itself to defeat the art market
In October 2018, seconds after Banksy's 'Girl with Balloon' sold at Sotheby's for £1.04 million, a hidden shredder built into the frame activated, shredding the lower half of the painting. The stunt was a critique of art-market commercialisation. Rather than destroying value, it appeared to double it: the shredded work — renamed 'Love is in the Bin' — sold in 2021 for £18.6 million, a 17-fold increase. Banksy later posted a video revealing he had built the shredder into the frame years earlier, in anticipation of the auction.
