Stoicism teaches that your interpretation creates your suffering
Epictetus, a Stoic philosopher who was born a slave in ancient Rome, taught that 'men are disturbed not by the things which happen, but by the opinions about the things.' The Stoic dichotomy of control distinguishes between what is 'up to us' (our judgements, desires, intentions) and what is not (our body, reputation, external events). Nearly every modern cognitive therapy — from CBT to ACT — is built on this same insight: that psychological distress arises not from events themselves but from the meaning we assign to them.
