Van Gogh Only Sold One Painting During His Lifetime
Vincent van Gogh sold just one painting while alive — "The Red Vineyard" — for 400 francs in 1890, four months before his death. He produced over 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings in roughly a decade of intense work. Today his works sell for hundreds of millions of dollars. His commercial failure was partly because the Impressionist market was still developing when he worked.
