The Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana, not Rome
The Caesar salad was created in 1924 by Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant restaurateur in Tijuana, Mexico. During a busy Fourth of July weekend, running low on supplies, he improvised a salad with what he had: romaine lettuce, olive oil, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, egg, and Parmesan — tossed tableside as theatre for his guests. The original recipe didn't include anchovies; they were added later and became standard. Cardini trademarked his dressing in 1948. The salad is now one of the most ordered dishes in North American restaurants.
