Redundancy Is the Core Principle Behind All Reliable Systems
Every reliable engineered system — from aircraft to the internet — is built around redundancy: multiple independent components that can fail individually without causing total system failure. The TCP/IP protocol was designed so that if any node went down, the network would route around it. In engineering, "single points of failure" are the enemy.
