Social connection predicts longevity more reliably than lifestyle
A Harvard study tracking the health of 724 men for 80 years — the longest-running study of adult life — found that the quality of close relationships was the single strongest predictor of mental and physical health in later life. Men with warm, connected relationships at age 50 were healthier at 80 than those with high cholesterol, better fitness, or higher incomes who were isolated. Robert Waldinger, the study's current director, summarised it as: 'Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.'
