The 1936 Olympics were supposed to prove Aryan supremacy — Jesse Owens won four gold medals

Adolf Hitler intended the 1936 Berlin Olympics to showcase the supposed superiority of the Aryan race. Jesse Owens, a Black American athlete, won four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, long jump, and 4x100m relay, breaking or equalling 11 Olympic records. German crowd favourite Luz Long, in an act of remarkable sportsmanship, advised Owens on his long jump technique before Owens beat him. Hitler reportedly refused to publicly congratulate Owens — though the IOC president had already prohibited the Führer from conducting selective congratulations after day one.
