Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime

Vincent van Gogh produced roughly 2,100 artworks in a decade of prolific work before his death in 1890 at age 37. During his lifetime, he sold a single painting: 'The Red Vineyard', purchased for 400 Belgian francs (about £30) in February 1890 — four months before he died. His brother Theo supported him financially throughout his career, spending more on Vincent's art supplies than Vincent ever earned. 'The Starry Night', now arguably the world's most recognisable painting, sold at auction in 1987 for $39.9 million and is held permanently by MoMA, New York.
